Denise Power // Motherhood

Meet Denise, She is a work at home mom- owner and creator of LM Organics. She has a son Rivers who is 3.5 and a daughter Parker who is 1.

What does the role of "mother" mean to you?

The role of mother means self-sacrifice.  And, really, what better way to walk like, and depend more on Jesus?! It means constantly considering the wants and needs of the ones that the Lord has placed in my care, before considering myself - wants OR needs (shower? rarely. breakfast? sometimes. haha).  As a naturally selfish human, this is hard work, and an even harder (consistent) lesson, and I’m more than grateful to have been counted worthy of this calling.

It means asking for forgiveness more than ever - from my children when I act in a manner different than I should, from my husband - for MANY things including, but not limited to putting my desires (sleep, free time, disciplining and parenting strategies) before his, overlooking him in the busyness of life with littles, being short with him in times of little sleep or a hectic schedule, etc.

It means begging the Lord daily (HOURLY) for Him to give me the fruits of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, self-control), and to not allow my flesh to stand in the way of my sweet babies coming to know and love HIM.

What is the best advice you have ever received when it comes to motherhood?

Gosh - how can I just pick one thing?

I think this changes with the season of mothering that you are in.  For my current season, I think the best advice I’ve gotten recently was to remember that in the hard moments of parenting, my children NEED ME.  They don’t fuss and cling and whine because they are trying to annoy the bajeezes out of me.  They literally NEED me for EVERYTHING (and they just truly love me and want to be with me - how can you get annoyed with THAT? ha!  “Sorry for ANNOYING you with my FRIENDSHIP!” - Andy Bernard, anyone? no? yeah?) .  I find that if I will focus on meeting their needs FIRST (snack/potty/projects to busy themselves/etc.) the day is more smooth for us all.  Those days are FAR more joyful and far less frustrating for all of us.  It makes it so much easier to ENJOY my sweet kiddos, and they are SUCH a joy!

How do you like to spend days with your little one?

We like to stay busy!  With a 3 year old boy, you kind of HAVE to, right??  We go to the gym (“Mommy’s gym” or Achievers for their open gym) most mornings, and after Miss Parker’s nap time, we usually run errands, or play outside (when the mosquitos aren’t feeding on us…), go for walks, the park, swing, READ, build with legos, art projects, and play music together! oh, and go to Target…. did i mention we basically live there?

What do you find most important in your role as a mother?

Constantly begging the Lord to somehow reach my children, in spite of me, to love Him and to love people, because as hard as I may try, I will (and do, constantly) fail in my example to them.  They are His children that He has entrusted to us, and we can do nothing more than walk in obedience to teach them as best we can, and trust/know that He loves them infinitely more than even we do.
